Before you install the drywall, temporarily remove the brackets that support the garage door tracks and opener. This will make it easier to install the 4-mil poly and ceiling drywall and will result in a neater-looking job. Start by carefully measuring and recording the position of the tracks and opener. Measure from the nearest wall and from the floor. Then close the garage door, lock it closed and unplug the opener to disable it. Unscrew or unbolt the brackets that support the garage door tracks and remove them. Also remove the garage door opener brackets and support the opener on a ladder. It may be easier to entirely disconnect the opener and set it aside. Reinstall the garage door track brackets using a new section of angle iron on the ceiling. Attach each new ceiling angle iron with four 5/16-in. x 3-in. lag screws driven into the center of the ceiling joist or into wood blocking that’s screwed to the adjacent ceiling framing.

Wood sheathing, such as plywood or oriented strandboard (OSB), represents a simple yet economical finish option for garage walls. It can be fastened directly to the wall framing using screws, yet requires none of the taping and finishing associated with drywall. Wood panels work well for covering insulation, but you might want to caulk or otherwise seal the joints between panels to prevent air leakage through the wall. Plywood and OSB also create an effective support and fastening surface for shelves and other additions to garage walls. Leave walls natural or paint them to achieve the desired finish for your garage.

Finish the concrete floor of your garage. Visit your local home improvement store to purchase an epoxy concrete floor paint. Scrub and etch your garage floor to eliminate all dirt, dust and grime. Rinse it thoroughly with a water hose. Mix up epoxy paint according to manufacturer’s instructions. Use a paint brush to paint epoxy onto the floor around wall edges. Use a medium-nap roller to apply paint over the rest of the floor. Do small areas at a time, stopping occasionally to toss in the color flakes. Prepare and apply the top coat of epoxy to seal the floor. An epoxy garage floor covering will prevent oil and gas spills from sinking into the cement. Oil, gas and other liquids will simply bead up on top of the finished floor for easy clean-up.

While drywall serves as the most common wall finish throughout most modern homes, it’s not always the best choice for the garage. In addition to being difficult to finish properly, drywall simply isn’t as useful as other wall finishes when it comes to maximizing the functionality and organization in the garage. Before hanging drywall, consider alternative materials that add a practical or decorative touch in garages and workshops.

Install a work area in your garage through the inclusion of a work bench, cabinets, a tool box, pegboards and shelves. The amount of space you can dedicate to your work area depends on the overall size of your garage. Make sure you have plenty of room to park your vehicle. Choose one side of your garage to create your work area. Hang pegboard on the wall with nails. Hang tools from pegboards if desired. Install cabinetry or a tool box for tools you may want to keep hidden.
